Several years ago we spent a great deal of time experimenting with various open source frameworks, Content Management Systems (CMS), and portal platforms. What we found was that on almost every project we had difficulty using code developed by others to build best in class custom applications that would fit our customer's needs perfectly. In addition, we found that the constant security patching and version upgrades caused us to rethink our approach.  After careful consideration we decided to build our own framework and source code for all the products we offer. In fact, we use open source components in many of the applications we build today, just in a different way. The key difference is how we select and use open source only for modular components within our core framework. We only use components that are well established and have a committed support network. Typically these are small stand alone components such as FCK Editor (www.fckeditor.net). One of the main advantages for using open source in this way is that we can provide an enterprise class product on a small business budget.
